Materials

Thread: DMC® #5 Pearl Cotton, 498 Dark Red and 972 Deep Canary
Picot Gauge: Thin material cut to two widths: 5/8" (1.59 cm) and 5/16" (.79 cm)
Finished Size: 4" (10 cm) diameter

Round 1

With Dark Red DMC® # 5 Pearl Cotton wound on one shuttle, start ~6" (~15 cm) along thread with ring of 11 ds, 11 picots btwn. Use the 5/16" (.79 cm) picot gauge for all picots in project. Close ring. Make split ring at the height of the picots already made of 3 ds with shuttle thread and 3 ds with starting tail. This creates the 12th picot and first ring of 6 ds.
Using the 5/8" (1.59 cm) picot gauge, leave 5/8" of thread and make r8 of 2ds, p, 2ds, p, 2ds, p, ds, close ring. Leave another 5/8" of thread and make ring of 3ds, join to next picot in center ring 3ds, close ring repeat aroung joining last r8 with the loose tail from the beginning. Cut and tie off. Center wheel 12 spokes made.

Round 2

With Deep Canary DMC® # 5 Pearl Cotton wound on one shuttle, start at about the same distance along the thread. Look at detail and start at the first r8 and follow the arrows for direction - no spaces of thread are left along this round as it is all rings. Make ring 2ds, join to side picot of one spoke of wheel made in round #1, 2ds, p, ds, p, ds, p, 2ds, join to side picot of next spoke of wheel, 2ds, close ring. Do not turn work. Ring 3ds join to top picot of same spoke ring, 3ds close. Turn work, r8 of [2ds, p, 3 times] 2ds close. Turn work, ring 3ds join same spoke picot, 3ds, close ring. Turn work r8 of 2ds join to last picot of previous r8, 2ds, p, 2ds, p, 2ds, close ring. Turn work, ring of 3ds, join into same spoke picot, 3ds, close ring. Turn work r8 of 2ds join to last picot of previous r8, 2ds, p, 2ds, p, 2ds, close ring. Turn work, ring of 3ds, join into same spoke picot as previously (4 rings joined in same picot), 3ds, close ring. Don't turn work, ring 8 of 2ds join into last side picot of spoke ring, 2ds, p, ds, p, ds, p, 2ds, join side picot of next free spoke ring, 2ds, close ring, don't turn work, ring of 3 ds, join into top picot of spoke ring just joined, 3ds, close ring. Turn work, ring 8 of 2ds, join to last picot of 2nd ring 8 previously made, 2ds, p, 2ds, p, 2ds, close ring. Continue around joining where indicated in the detail. Make last r6, joining to picot and incorporating the beginning tail of thread.
Hmm!! Wonder what it would look like with a 3rd round?
